Research Title

The impact of intercultural engagements on cultural understanding via Confucius Institute in Britain

Research Summary

My research aims to explore how the diverse intercultural engagements can influence the cultural understanding through activities that organised by Confucius Institutes (CIs) in Britain. Along with the power changes from West to East, the Chinese government has been dedicated to the integration, instruction and promotion of Chinese culture worldwide. Similar to the purposes of the British Council, the Confucius Institute (CI) was established for language learning and cultural exchange overseas since 2004. Although there are 28 Confucius Institutes in Britain, no comprehensive study is conducted of what really happened in British CIs. On one hand, the booming numbers of CI, especially in developed countries, constantly received suspicious views from the Western perspectives. On the other hand, the voices from the CI itself as a new ‘Other’ from Periphery to Centre are missing. This study hopes to find out the different perceptions both from CI staff and cultural activity participants’ aspects, thereby compare and contrast their views of these activities in British CIs.
