Research title

Teacher Engagement in Professional Learning: A study of globalised groups of pre-sessional English language teachers' perceptions of agency

Research summary

Research into how teachers are engaged in professional learning in a multi-cultural workplace

The current mobile 21st century student profile has been exposed to rapid technology changes with resulting access to a plethora of information and experience. They are learning in a neo-liberal society that values education as a commodity, where they have a loud voice. This new approach to education is often different to what the their teachers themselves have experienced and, as such, it is important for these teachers continue learning and adapting their skills in order to address this gap in understanding.

However, filling this gap in understanding is not about informational learning alone. It also encompasses transformational professional learning such as asking teachers to reflect on and confront long-held beliefs and practices, which can be an uncomfortable process. Therefore, a better understanding of how to engage teachers in this process will add to researcher’s, participants’ and many teacher trainers’ knowledge concerning how to negotiate a training plan that is both workable and meaningful.

The impetus for this research stems from a problem identified through the personal experience of the researcher as an English language teacher trainer and from the experiences of the researcher’s peers. This research has been undertaken through the lens of English language teachers in private Turkish university pre-sessional programmes with multicultural staff. The research is framed within an interpretive paradigm to develop a deeper understanding of the participant teachers’ perceptions of what engages them in professional learning.

The research will be of interest to teacher trainers and teachers in many disciplines by offering a perspective on how to address teachers’ professional learning needs from understanding their perceptions of what engages them.
