Research title: Learning to Become an English Teacher: An Investigation on the Engagement and Conceptual Change among Chinese Learners on TESOL Master’s Programmes

Research Summary

Aiming at understanding international student’s experience of learning engagement and conceptual change through learning in UK Master’s programmes, my longitudinal project attempts to explore and contribute to the methodological, theoretical and practical knowledge to facilitate and support their learning in UK Higher Education institutions. Creative research methods including audio diaries and drawing-featured interviews were employed in order to seek more in-depth and reflective insights from participants.

Additional Information

Dangeni's research interests include student engagement, language teacher cognition, the Internationalisation of Higher Education and creative methods.

Dangeni's current PhD project and research interests come from her personal experience as an international student in MSc TESOL programme at the University of Edinburgh. Her previous working experience as an EAP lecturer also made her reflect critically on how the TESOL programme can help to implement theory into practice. she is passionate about investigating international student's learning experiences, the roles of the learning opportunities provided by the programme in facilitating language teacher's conceptual change.

Dangeni's strong interest in international students' engagement and learning at UK universities encourages her to explore more by playing different roles at the university. Her roles including:

  • research intern at the University of Glasgow for the project 'towards maximising international PhD students' experience in the UK 
  • part-time digital intern in the adam smith business school
  • PgR ambassador in the school of education
  • research intern for PgR resource toolkit project
