One of the University of Glasgow’s contributions to the 2021 Comparative and International Education Society (CIES) conference, held on 25 April - 2 May 2021, under the theme of Social Responsibility within Changing Contexts, was a panel session that provided the opportunity for exchange among both early career researchers (Preeti Dagar, Emily-Marie Pacheco and Esa Aldegheri) and more established academics (Evelyn Arizpe, Sinead Gormally, Oscar Odena and Marta Moskal). These colleagues all work within the common theme of education, culture and learning in response to conflict and protracted crisis. The panel shared in a comparative manner recent empirical evidence from various international contexts and discussed problems related to research and practice within the area. The session was centred on the important role that education (formal and informal) and young people play in their communities in response to conflict and protracted crisis, one of the major global challenges that needs to be addressed in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
