Dr David Cross

David Cross graduated BDS from Edinburgh University in 1988, with the William Guy medal for Oral Surgery and the Baron van der Heyden de Lancey award for the best student in the year.
He was awarded a Medical Faculty Research Fellowship from the University of Edinburgh in 1990, to study Oral Microbiology and Periodontology in HIV patients. During this period of research he was awarded an Oral and Dental Research Trust Award to visit the Forsyth Dental Center in Boston, USA. He presented the results of his research at a number of international meetings including, Internation Association of Dental Research, Glasgow 1992, World Oral Medicine Conference, Edinburgh, 1992, and The Society of Anaerobic Microbiology, Cambridge, UK in 1993. He was awarded a PhD from the University of Edinburgh in 1994.
After completing hospital training posts at the Glasgow Dental Hospital he was successful in the FDSRCPS examination in 1994. He then began speciality training in Orthodontics in 1994 at the Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy and the Edinburgh Dental Institute. During this period he undertook a further research project in Rapid Maxillary Expansion and was awarded a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) in 1998. He was successful in the Membership in Orthodontics examination at the Royal College of Surgeon of Edinburgh in the same year.
He then returned to the Glasgow Dental Hospital as a Senior Registrar and completed his higher specialist training in 2000 with a Fellowship in Orthodontics from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He was appointed a part-time senior lecturer in Orthodontics at Glasgow University in 2001 and has been continuously developing the undergraduate orthodontic curriculum. He is involved in postgraduate and undergraduate Orthodontic teaching, and is co-supervisor of two Orthodontic research projects involving RME and 3D imaging. Recently published research papers include oral medicine and orthodontics, and auto-transplantation. He is currently an examiner for the Membership in Orthodontics of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He works part-time in specialist Orthodontic practice.
