John’s main research interests are in Catholic Moral Theology and Value Theory. Particular areas of interest include: 

  • Classical & Contemporary Christian and Secular Moral Thought
  • Catholic Social Thought
  • Applied Catholic Theology
  • Aesthetics and Theology
  • Fundamental Theology and Philosophy of Religion
  • Science and Religion

John studied Electronic Engineering at the National University of Ireland, Galway (BE), and at the University of Oxford (DPhil). He subsequently pursued Catholic ordination studies at Blackfriars Studium, Oxford, and obtained a BA(MA) in Philosophy and Theology at Blackfriars Hall, University of Oxford. More recently, John gained a PhD in Moral Philosophy from the University of Edinburgh.

John is a Dominican friar and Catholic priest. He is engaged in parish and university chaplaincy ministry. He is Assistant Editor of New Blackfriars, a journal in Philosophy, Theology, and Cultural Issues, published by Wiley-Blackwell. John is also a Fellow of Blackfriars Hall, University of Oxford, and is a member of the RSE Young Academy of Scotland (https://www.youngacademyofscotland.org.uk/).


John jointly supervises postgraduate research projects, principally in Catholic Moral Theology and Catholic Social Thought.
