After taking a first-class honours degree in Electrical Engineering from Tabriz University, Iran, Jamal moved to Britain to work for BBC External Services as a journalist. He then came to Glasgow where he took an Honours degree in English Language and Literature. He has taught English Language at various institutions in the UK and overseas, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. In 1994 he pioneered software for computer-assisted learning of Semantics.
Jamal tutors and lectures at all levels in the Department, for the most part (but not exclusively) in the area of Modern English Language. In addition to his publications, he has reviewed many books.
Jamal has supervised many postgraduate dissertations, all of which are related to his teaching and research interests, including a pioneering MPhil project over a decade ago on the language of Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) and its use in TEFL.
