Historical English Language/Scots and English in Scotland Research Review

Wendy Anderson submitted a successful bid to the AHRC for a major Research Grant: Mapping Metaphor with the Historical Thesaurus of the OED (£471k).  As Director of the Scottish Corpora projects, she led the AHRC-funded Corpus of Modern Scottish Writing to completion and managed the continued development of the Scottish Corpus of Texts and SpeechCarole Hough was awarded a major grant by JISC (£79k, Scots Words and Placenames), and is a co-investigator on two major AHRC-funded projects on onomastics and semantics (the latter with Wendy Anderson as PI, the former with colleagues in Celtic and Gaelic).  She was appointed First Vice-President of the International Society of Anglo-Saxonists.  Significant plenaries this session included the prestigious Quiggin Lecture (Cambridge); she also organised a major competition on Scottish onomastics in collaboration with Learning and Teaching Scotland, and (like many English Language colleagues) has been involved with the interdisciplinary Colour Studies Group. The School will host the 25th World Congress of Onomastic Sciences in 2014 (Hough), the 17th Conference of the International Society of Anglo-Saxonists in 2015 (Hough, Biggam, Kay). Jeremy Smith held a Visiting Fellowship at All Souls College, Oxford, in 2010-2011, and completed Older Scots: A Linguistic Reader for the Scottish Text Society.  He also organised three conferences, sponsored by the Royal Society of Edinburgh, on the topic of Textual Afterlives, held at Glasgow University, Queen’s University Belfast, and Trinity College Dublin.  Plenary addresses included the AHRC-funded Linguistic Geographies conference at the Bodleian Library, Oxford, and the Osaka Corpus Linguistics conference, Japan. Alan Riach’s Literary Scotland: A Traveller's Guide (ASLS/VisitScotland) won the Gold Award for Best Publication at the Chartered Institute of Public Relations awards (2011). Rhona Brown continues to serve on as General Editor on Rodopi’s SCROLL series, and Reviews Editor at Scottish Literary Review.
