Investigating Phonological Variation and Change in Leicester

Research summary

My project is a sociophonetic study of the English spoken by first-generation Iraqi Arab speakers in two UK cities, namely London and Glasgow.
It investigates phonetic variation in the realisation of word- initial and final /l/, VOT in word- initial stops, FACE and GOAT vowels in Iraqi English, with the aim of uncovering the possible impact of intra-ethnic demographic and socioeconomic diversity on Iraqis' sociolinguistic identity.
