Use of the Fantastic and the Impossible in Scottish Writing to Expose Realities of Domestic Abuse
I will write a collection of essays, analysing narrative techniques (form, language, tropes, etc.) used by fantasy and surrealist writers to highlight social injustice, and apply this analysis to a particularly Scottish tradition of writing that uses magic and the impossible to address domestic issues. I will also write a story collection using the techniques I analyse to address the nuanced facets of domestic abuse in its various forms – emotional, physical, sexual – through the fantastic and surreal.
