Work with us on software development projects

Are you in need of software development or Computer Science assistance but not sure where to turn? We have a number of initiatives to help you whether you are in need of developing a website or mobile app, or need to collaborate with a Computer Scientist for research purposes.

If you require software development services, check out the Glasgow University Software Service or the CS Team Project.

Glasgow University Software Service (GUSS)

A student-led software development service that aims to allow University colleagues leverage student skills at an affordable rate. This service includes the services of one student and a project manager to oversee and manage the development of your project to your specific needs.

Students benefit from gaining real-world experience while customers are able to access a custom-designed solution that is cost-effective and built to their unique specifications.

Close coordination between the customer and student is maintained by the project manager through regular meetings to make sure requirements are properly recorded and fulfilled, incorporating a flexible approach to allow customers to change project specifications during the lifecycle of the project.

This service is available throughout the year.  Contact compsci-guss@glasgow.ac.uk with enquiries about this service.

CS Team Project - Level 3

During their third year, Computer Science and Software Engineering students undertake a year long Team Project with real customers, exposing students to real requirements uncertainty. Flipped classroom teaching is adopted, giving teams one day each week to work on their project in a redesigned laboratory. Software process and quality are emphasised in the course assessment, imposing technical debt. A leadership course for senior students is incorporated, where they act as mentors to the project team students.

Customers are required to submit projects for students to bid their interest on and are then selected by the customer to begin work. Students and customers are then required to meet regularly to discuss requirements and report on progress.

Previous customers have spoken positively about the performance of the students overall, station that they were impressed by the knowledge, ability and work ethic of the students and felt that the students were better than some professional tech companies, particularly in their ability to ‘empathise’ with the customers’ requirements.

This is a free service.  If you would like to participant in this program, please contact timothy.storer@glasgow.ac.uk
