Mr Richard Paterson

  • Senior Research Fellow (Theatre, Film & Television Studies)

Research interests

Richard Paterson joined the Centre for Cultural Policy Research in April 2017 as Senior Research Fellow working on the ESRC-funded Television Production in Transition research project. Prior to joining the University he was Head of Research and Scholarship at the British Film Institute. He worked at the BFI for 37 years in a wide variety of senior roles.

He established the International Television Studies Conference in 1984 providing, for the first time, an intellectual space for the then nascent discipline; created and managed the ground-breaking Mass-Observation style ‘One Day in the Life of Television’ project in 1988, and subsequently developed the longitudinal BSC-funded Audience Tracking Study (1991 – 1996) and the ESRC-funded TV Industry Tracking Study (1994 – 1998). Other important research initiatives included the first research on ethnic minority representation in British television that resulted in the two part documentary Black and White in Colour, for which he was an executive producer; and in depth analysis of international news coverage of the war in Bosnia and the aftermath of 9/11. In 2003, he established the lottery-funded BFI Screenonline (www.screenonline.org.uk), an online encyclopaedia of British film and television history. He has had a long term engagement with policy issues relating to screen industries and edited The Broadcasting Debate series (1990-1993), The BBC Charter Review series (1993-1995) and the UK Film Initiative series (1991 – 1994). He became an Honorary Professor at the Centre in 2012.
