Research title

Towards an understanding of Mozart?s use of tempo markings and proportion: Temporal strategies in the finales of Le nozze di Figaro

Research summary

The principal object of my research is to determine whether we can gain greater insight into Mozart’s tempo markings through an investigation of his own concern with proportion. The main focus of my research is on the finales in Le nozze di Figaro, where the music (lasting uninterrupted for around twenty minutes) is advanced through ten tempo and time signature changes. Through proportional analysis, contemporary treatises and other primary sources, I aim to determine how Mozart intended each section of the Acts II & IV finales, with their own tempo markings and time signatures, to relate to one another.
