Research summary

Research title

Owning China: The Material Life of London Tradesmen 1700-1750

This PhD project asks a central question of how chinaware functioned in London tradesmen’s homes in the first half of eighteenth century. Evidences from London Court of Orphans' inventories reveal the cultural biography of chinaware in a foreign domestic setting. I argue that this exotic commodity integrated into English domestic interior as early as the beginning of eighteenth century and it became an important alternative to traditional home wares such as silver, pewter and delftware.
