In the past fortnight, drawing on his research into regulation, Philip Schlesinger engaged on three occasions with colleagues in Brazil and Uruguay, renewing his longstanding links with the region.
He joined colleagues from Edinburgh University, Geneva’s Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies and the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro in developing interdisciplinary ideas concerning the regulation of Facebook in Brazil. He gave papers to the two online workshops on the comparative politics of regulation held on 28 and 29 October.
Next, on 3 December, Philip gave the opening lecture on UK broadcasting, in Spanish, to the open forum on the future of a public service media law in Uruguay. Organised by the Universidad de la República de Montevideo, this online event brought together speakers from the press, broadcasting, film, creative production, the academy and civil society. The forum can be accessed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Vrhs17hHL4
Finally, on 11 December, together with four of his CREATe colleagues, Philip spoke on the neo-regulation of internet platforms in the online panel on ‘Innovation, transparency and regulation’ at the 4th International Conference on Competition and Innovation, organised by the São Paulo-based Brazilian Institute for Competition and Regulation.
