Call for Submissions
In Touch | Online Exhibition

Submission Deadline: 17:00, Thursday 1 October
Exhibition Dates: 12 – 22 November 2020

The College of Arts at the University of Glasgow is seeking innovative creative work for an online exhibition and screening of audio-visual art to be hosted on its website from 12 – 22 November 2020. Working in partnership with the charity Deafblind Scotland, the exhibition forms part of the College’s programme for Being Human 2020, the UK’s national festival of the humanities, for which the University of Glasgow is a festival hub. ‘In Touch’ is also informed by a wider research project into the impact of touch deprivation on deafblind communities, and a means of re-examination sense perception as our common ground for experiencing the world.

We are seeking a limited number of audio-visual works which push the creative boundaries and conventions of their mediums to explore the themes of touch, touch deprivation and sense perception. Questions which may inform your creative response include:

What can we learn from the heightened awareness of - and restrictions surrounding - touch, physical distance and intimacy which characterises our experience of Covid19?
How can the experiences of deafblind communities, and others who rely on their sense of touch to navigate the world, aid the understanding of our ‘new normal’, and cultivate creative strategies, tools and technologies that facilitate safe and reliable communication?
How might different experiences of touch, imposed by Covid19, re-shape audio-visual art practices relating to senses?

Submission Details

We welcome submissions of audio-visual works of no more than 10 minutes duration
A statement of no more than 300 words is to be submitted alongside your completed piece, outlining its relevance to the ideas outlined in this call
Whilst pre-existing works may be considered for this call, all submissions will be judged in relation to the post-Covid19 context to which the exhibition and the research speak
A fee of £250 will be paid for all works selected through this call

Work by Deafblind Scotland members and University of Glasgow staff and students is likely to be featured alongside the works selected through this call. We are exploring the possibility of a live screening of relevant works, which will be confirmed in due course.
