BHF 4 Year PhD students attended PhD/Alumni Induction Day at the British Heart Foundation

On 27th of November, current BHF first year and second-year PhD students from SCMH attended the BHF PhD induction at the BHF Scotland head office in Edinburgh. We met and interacted with BHF PhD students from the University of Edinburgh and BHF public engagement officers from London. The induction involved the overview of public engagement opportunities, fundraising activities and volunteering occasions available in Scotland. The final session involved team working events on interacting and engaging with non-scientists.

In the evening, we joined the BHF alumni reception at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. This event allowed us to network and forge new connections with colleagues and staff from the University of Edinburgh. The main highlight of the reception was the talk from Dr. Vijay Kunadian, an academic consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Newcastle University. She discussed the BHF’s ‘Bias & Biology’ campaign about women and heart disease.

Overall, this event was very helpful to PhD students. This induction gave us an insight into the importance of public engagement activities, skills and attributes required for planning effective public engagement events and how vital it is to showcase our research to the public, who fund us.
