Prof Christian Delles and Dr David Carty co-authors on paper published in JAMA

Dr David Carty and Prof. Christian Delles were recently co-authors on a paper in JAMA (The Journal of the American Medical Association) entitled “Association of Thyroid Function Test Abnormalities and Thyroid Autoimmunity With Preterm Birth: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis” .Prof. Scott Nelson from the School of Medicine also contributed to the paper.

The paper was the first study from the International Consortium on Thyroid and Pregnancy, led by the team from Rotterdam, Netherlands. The study examined over 47,000 pregnant women, from 19 cohorts worldwide. Over 5,000 of the women in the study were from the Glasgow cohort, originally recruited as part of an SCMH-based pre-eclampsia study. The paper shows that in women without known thyroid disease, subclinical abnormalities of thyroid function in early pregnancy are associated with an increased risk of preterm birth. It is a landmark study that confirms the importance of normal thyroid function and helps clinicians in the assessment and interpretation of thyroid function tests in pregnancy and builds upon a previous paper by the Glasgow team published in 2017.
