Guest Lecture: Professor Thomas F Lüscher
The School of Cardiovascualar and Metabolic Health (SCMH) was pleased to receive Professor Thomas F Lüscher as its guest speaker on the 29th of January 2020. The visit was co-ordinated by Cardiovascular Research (CVR). Professor Lüscher is the Director of Research, Education & Development and a Consulting Cardiologist at the Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospital Trust and serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the European Heart Journal (EHJ). He also maintains his links to the University of Zurich, where he has a research group in molecular cardiology. He has previously led cardiovascular research groups at the Universities of Basel, Berne, and Zurich.
Professor Lüscher’s talk discussed whether the process of aging should be considered a disease. This covered multiple mediators of cardiovascular aging that can affect the vasculature, cardiac function, and diabetes. The potential of targeting the molecular processes of aging in cardiovascular disease interested many leading academics in the school, with Professor Naveed Sattar, Professor Colin Berry, Professor John McMurray, and Professor Godfrey Smith having extended discussions with Professor Lüscher.
Since the relocation of CVR to the University of Glasgow, it has worked closely with SCMH to help promote the publication and generation of world leading cardiovascular research. Many researchers in the school serve on the Journal’s Editorial Board and use their expertise to drive the excellent research output of CVR. After his talk, Professor Lüscher met with senior members of the Editorial Board. The discussions initiated during the visit will likely lead to long lasting collaborations between SCMH researchers and Prof Lüscher’s ongoing research programmes.
