Science Den Competition 2019


Supporting Innovation for Early Career Researchers

The College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences is hosting a ‘Science Den’ event on Thursday 26th September 2019 where six teams of Postgraduate students and Post-doctoral research staff will pitch their innovation to a panel of judges.  The prize for the winning team is £10,000 to develop their project in addition to an intellectual property review by the University’s Technology Transfer Office.


Applicants must apply in teams of minimum 2 and maximum of 5 people. Teams can include PhD students and research staff (maximum one per team) and may include MRes student or an industrial collaborator (optional). Applications can include team members from the College of Science and Engineering; Physics; Chemistry etc.


Applications must pitch an innovation that solves a biological problem, this includes but is not limited to a compound, app, kit, device or technique that is novel. Innovations may be at any stage of development (conception to prototype). Entries will be shortlisted in April and finalists announced in May 2019. Come along to our information session on 20th February, Gannochy Lecture Theatre, Wolfson Medical School Building, from 11am – 12.30pm to ask questions and hear from our 2017 winners “Parasites, Ponies and Plastic Chips”.


Applicants will be supported during the process by mentors and will attend workshops to learn about the translation of research including intellectual property. Mentors will assist with pitch preparation ahead of the final.


The final will take place on Thursday 26th of September 2019 at the Glasgow Science Centre. Teams will have a 5-minute pitch which will be judged by a panel based on the novelty, credibility, achievability and potential to create impact. The winning team will receive £10,000 and to be utilised for the development of the innovation including marketing, advertising, market research, research and development costs and any reasonable cost relating to the potential of the innovation.
