We were delighted to welcome Ms Caroline Gardner; Auditor General for Scotland as a guest speaker of the Adam Smith Business School's Practitioner Seminar Series. Ms Gardner lead on a topic of strengthening Scotland’s public finances and gave an insight into the role of the Auditor General. Ms Gardner presented to Undergraduate and Postgraduate students.

Biography

Caroline has been the Auditor General for Scotland since 2012, responsible for auditing the Scottish Government and public bodies in Scotland and reporting to the Scottish Parliament. She has 30 years experience in audit, governance and financial management, and is the accountable officer for Audit Scotland.

A qualified accountant member and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountability (CIPFA), Caroline has an MBA from Warwick Business School. She served as President of CIPFA during 2006-07, and was recently named as a 2016 Trailblazer in the Public Finance Top 50.

Caroline has held a number of senior positions; she was Deputy Auditor General with Audit Scotland between 2000 and 2010, including 6 years as Controller of Audit. She spent a year as Chief Financial Officer to the Turks and Caicos Islands Government in 2010-11, appointed by the UK Government's Department for International Development to restore stability to the country's finances. Her previous employers include the Accounts Commission for Scotland, the Audit Commission for England and Wales, and Wolverhampton Metropolitan Borough Council.

Caroline is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. She was a member of the International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants from 2010 to 2015, and has been a Director of Public Sector Audit Appointments Ltd since 2014.
