We were delighted to welcome Hazel Curtis; Chief Economist at Seafish as a guest speaker of the Adam Smith Business School's Practitioner Seminar Series, who presented to Undergraduate and Postgraduate students.

Biography 

Hazel Curtis completed a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Science at the University of Stirling and a MSc in Conservation of Soil Fertility at Wye College, University of London. After working in business for several years she completed her MBA at the University of Edinburgh. A brief spell as a Senior Business Analyst at the Royal Bank of Scotland led in 2000 to a role with the Sea Fish Industry Authority as Industry Analyst and, since 2002, as Chief Economist.   

At Seafish, Hazel developed a comprehensive data collection programme to describe the business performance of the UK catching and processing sectors and instigated a programme of strategic outlook and advice for the processing sector. Her practical applied research combined with further studies in fisheries economics at the University of Portsmouth. Hazel has contributed her expertise to many government and industry initiatives to help improve fisheries management and business practices. She is a member of the European Commission’s Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries, providing official advice to the Commission, and from 2011 to 2015 was President of the European Association of Fisheries Economists. Hazel has recently been elected as a member of the Executive Committee of the International Institute of Fisheries Economics and Trade, the global professional association for fisheries economists.
