ASES & GUCS Business Case Competition 2018
The Adam Smith Economics Society (ASES) and the Glasgow University Consulting Society (GUCS) held the third annual Business Case Competition on 9 February 2018, hosted and supported by the Adam Smith Business School. Business school students competed against each other to find the best solution to a real-life business case for a Scottish start-up.
The case came from a company called Motovate, a Scottish based company with a development centre in Serbia. The teams were tasked to determine how Motovate could best develop new territories for its Healthcare jobs app which links health professionals and healthcare providers in terms of employment.
Eight teams of four students put together a strategy and presented their solutions throughout the day to a panel of judges at various locations on the University of Glasgow campus. Final presentations were staged in the Hilton Hotel in Glasgow’s West End where the audience also had the opportunity to vote on Best Speaker. The winning team, Carpe Noctem, now have the opportunity to travel to the Copenhagen Business School competition.
Motovate’s CEO, Kenny Maclean, acted as a judge and was impressed with each team’s ideas and suggestions. Industry professionals were also present from Mind Mate, the Boston Consulting Group, Made Brave and Cazenove Capital. After the winning team was announced there was a networking drinks reception, and a three course dinner for students, judges, alumni and business representatives.
The event aims to increase students’ employability skills by giving them the experience of presenting professionally, and the chance to network and engage with alumni and representatives from the world of business.
Judges included Margaret Milner, ex-Director of Undergraduate Studies; Andrew Mclean from Esure; Chris O’Shea from Smiths Group; Laura Ward from Barclays; Dr Ramona Blanes International Business and Services lecturer; Diane Morton from Morgan Stanley; Marc O’Brien from Capco; Alec Pearson, PSP lead; Yvonne Greene from NatWest and Chris O’Shea from the Smith Group. There were also many alumni present from Cisco, SwarmOnline and Heineken among others.
