Speaker Biography 

 Ian Small headshot

Ian Small is Head of Public Policy and Corporate Affairs at BBC Scotland.            

A member of BBC Scotland’s senior management team since 2002, and of the Scotland committee of the BBC Board, he is responsible for many of the organisation’s public-facing functions, including strategic reporting and accountability, stakeholder engagement, reputation management and partnerships.                     

Ian began his career in teaching and lecturing and undertaking various roles before moving to Strathclyde Regional Council in 1988 to join its press team. He later worked in the region's Education Department prior to a move to BBC Scotland's press office in 1995. After working in PR, marketing and international relations in the Middle East he returned to Scotland in 2000 to help kick-start the build of the BBC’s new digital broadcast headquarters at Pacific Quay, Glasgow.                         

From 2002 to 2006, he oversaw the organisation's governance and accountability functions as BBC Secretary in Scotland. He is Honorary Professor at Glasgow University in the School of Culture and Creative Arts; a board member of Edinburgh University’s Al Waleed Centre for the Study of Islam in the Contemporary World; and formerly a member of the Board of Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland and a Director/Trustee of Inspiring Scotland.
