Alumni Association profiles

Our alumni associations wouldn't exist without the fantastic efforts and support of our local Board and Council Committee members. Members from some of our biggest associations share their experiences since graduating from the University of Glasgow.

Beijing Alumni Association

The University of Glasgow Beijing Alumni Association was officially approved by the University of Glasgow Development & Alumni Office in July 2007. Since then, the Alumni Contact Wenjie Qian had been working with other alumni volunteers and supported various University events in the region. In June 2014, the Beijing AA was restructured, reflecting the current needs of the alumni in Beijing.

Currently six alumni sit on the Board, led by Lei Zhang. They have been working closely with the Adam Smith Business School and the Development & Alumni Office to host various alumni events.

I am currently the Partner of Chance Bridge Partners.  The study experience in University of Glasgow gave me a fantastic starting point to develop my career. Back to 12 years ago when I graduated, my degree with Glasgow helped me to get the opportunity to work for the European Commission. Furthermore, the knowledge and skills of analysis obtained from GU are very helpful to my daily work even today. I cherish the great time in Glasgow.

Currently I am working in China Merchants Securities Co., Ltd as an Investment Consultant of Secondary Market. I would like to work with the other Beijing AA Board members to organise more meaningful events for the UoG alumni in Beijing.


Chengdu Alumni Association

The University of Glasgow Chengdu Alumni Association was officially approved by the University of Glasgow Development & Alumni Office in March 2016.  Currently 7 alumni sit on the Board, led by Haiwei Han. They have been working closely with the Development & Alumni Office to develop robust alumni engagement plans to enhance communications between the alumni from the GU-UESTC joint degree programmes and those from single GU degrees.

Haiwei Han is a successful businessman and a registered lawyer. He is founder of the UK company – WIZDII HOLDING LIMITED which holds controlling rights in two affiliated entities – an education company specialising in cross-culture programs and a law firm specialising in commercial practices in England, mainland China and most of the states in the United States.
Haiwei has been assisting alumni work in Chengdu since 2006. He is passionate and dedicated to helping the University to develop a strong local alumni community through the Chengdu Alumni Association. Haiwei’s credo is University of Glasgow – my life pride.

Xinyan Ai, Vice Chair
LLM in International Commercial Law, 2013

As a registered lawyer, Xinyan works in Sichuan MingJu Law Firm. He specialises in civil and commercial litigation & arbitration, as well as Corporate Legal Counsel. He provides clients with professional legal services in respect of financial leasing, merger and acquisition, contract drafting and commercial negotiation.

Xinyan Ai is also a member of Toastmasters International and President of the Hallo Toastmasters Club in Chengdu.

Xinyan felt honoured to be the Vice Chair of the Chengdu Alumni Association. He is keen to try his best and work with other board members to enhance the University’s profile and enrich local alumni life.

Yiqi Li, Vice Chair
MSc in Corporate Governance & Accountability, 2014

Yiqi currently works in the Industrial-finance Department of a central enterprise and is mainly responsible for revitalising the group’s assets by multiple financing channels.

Yiqi is very grateful for what the University has given her, not only academic knowledge but also valuable practical skills that made the whole Glasgow experience memorable. Yiqi was a class representative and a committee member of GU Learning & Teaching Committee during 2013-2014.

Yiqi believes that taking the position as the Vice Chair of the Chengdu Alumni Association offers her a great opportunity to serve both GU and local alumni. She looks forward to meeting more university alumni and enhancing their alumni experience.

Sha Li, Communication Officer

Currently Sha Li works in Sichuan Sword Law Firm. She regards her time in Glasgow as one of the best moments in her life. She is keen to work with the other board members to serve the University of Glasgow alumni in Chengdu.

Currently Xiaohong works at Chengdu Tian Yi Real Estate Co. Ltd. as a Financial Executive. Xiaohong welcome every GU alum in Chengdu to join their big family.

Shuai Tang, Treasurer
MSc in Real Estate, 2013

Shuai is currently working at a state-owned real estate enterprise in Chengdu as a professional in real estate investment and commercial management. University of Glasgow is regarded as her favourite place as it is where she studied, was married and had her lovely baby. As a treasurer of Chengdu Alumni Association, Shuai will try her best to serve the interests of both the University and her alumni.

Yiqing Wen, Event Officer
MA in Business& Management, 2015

After graduating from the University in 2015 with a Bachelor degree in Business & Management, Yiqing decided to return to her hometown, Chengdu, to start a career in business consulting. During her four years in Glasgow, she learned comprehensive knowledge about business, found her beloved career direction and obtained precious friendships. Yiqing would like to weave new great memories in association with UoG by serving the Chengdu Alumni Association. She will try her best to utilise every possible resource to serve our alumni and support every event.

The University of Glasgow Guangzhou Alumni Association was officially approved by the University of Glasgow Development & Alumni Office in Oct 2014.  Currently 4 alumni sit on the Board, led by Ling Mao. They have been working closely with the Adam Smith Business School and the Development & Alumni Office to host various local alumni events.

I could not help marvelling at the Neo-Gothic Style main building and splendid museums when I first arrived at the school. Throughout the year I gained so much knowledge from the University, and from different friends, teachers, and strangers. All these things made me understand why it is said that the ‘people make Glasgow’. Hunan Alumni Association

The University of Glasgow Hunan Alumni Association was officially approved by the University’s Development & Alumni Office in June 2017. 

There are currently 11 alumni sitting on the Board, led by Shan Chen. With the help of the Development & Alumni Office, the Hunan Alumni Association board members have started to work on developing communications with local alumni. They will organise events to enrich the life of local alumni, facilitate alumni networking opportunities and support the University’s strategic objectives in China.

The University of Glasgow Shanghai Alumni Association was officially approved by the University of Glasgow Development & Alumni Office in July 2007. Shenzhen Alumni Association

‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌University of Glasgow Shenzhen Alumni Association was first approved by the Development & Alumni Office in 2010 under the request of Mr. Weihua Liu (MBA, 2002). Since then Weihua had been working with other volunteers to bring together our pride alumni in Shenzhen and supporting the University's in-country activities. In August 2015, this Association went into restructure. Sever GU alumni volunteered to sit in the Shenzhen Alumni Association Board and started to serve the needs of the local alumni.

Currently, the Shenzhen Alumni Association is led by Ms Yiran Wu. The Board members are working closely with the Adam Smith Business School to strengthen the local alumni work.

After graduating from the University of Glasgow in 2013 with a Bachelor Degree in Accountancy with Finance, I returned to Shenzhen, my beloved hometown. I am keen to develop my career in this vibrant city, but also passionate about being in touch with the University. Since finishing my first Masters degree at Shenzhen University 5 years ago, I have been working as a lawyer in Shenzhen. My professional field is litigation and arbitration in civil law, and also in Corporate Banking & Financial Markets. I applied to do an LLM programme in 2015, and spent last year in amazing Glasgow. The time I spent at the University of Glasgow is precious to me, and has given many wonderful memories.

I am an investment advisor at the China Merchants Securities in Shenzhen. I graduated from the Adam Smith Business School at the University of Glasgow in 2014, majoring in financial forecasting and investment. What I learned and experienced during my masters degree at the University of Glasgow, I will treasure for the rest of my life. Tianjin Alumni Association

The University of Glasgow Tianjin Alumni Association was officially approved by the University of Glasgow Development & Alumni Office in October 2015. The same month, Tianjin Alumni Association joined the University delegation to witness the official launch of the University of Glasgow - Nankai University Joint Graduate School.

Tianjin Alumni Association is led by Fuze Song. He is currently looking to recruit a few board members to work together to host events to enrich local alumni life and enhance the University's profile.

Zhejiang Alumni Association

Zhejiang Alumni Association was established in Hangzhou in July 2017. The daily activities the responsibility of the Board of Directors of Zhejiang Alumni Association, who oversee six functions: the Presidium, the Secretariat, Department of Events, Department of Marketing, Department of Public Relations, and Department of Alumni Affairs. To date, the Zhejiang Alumni Association has carried out a variety of activities including the launch event and the Silicon Valley Elite Salon, both of which were well attended. Zhejiang Alumni Association is currently located in the Science and Technology Pioneer Park of Shangcheng District in Hangzhou. We hope through the Zhejiang Alumni Association, we can help you maintain a sense of belonging to the University of Glasgow and offer help wherever is possible. Come and join us!

My time at the University of Glasgow, was the most memorable time of my life, and where I formed many lasting friendships. It is a great honour for me to be the Chairman of Zhejiang Alumni Association, and I will spare no efforts in serving our alumni. We want all alumni to feel a strong sense of belonging to the Zhejiang Alumni Association, wherever they are in the world. People makes Glasgow, and Glasgow makes us who we are.

My time in Glasgow was the best experience of my life. I didn’t just gain knowledge, I developed cooperation skills, and friendship, and learned more about myself. Since coming back to China, I have been a Marketing Manager, an Event Expert, Project manager and a Client Manager. I am now an Event Manager at the Inspiration and Entrepreneurship Centre, Zero2IPO Group. The skills I have learned at the University of Glasgow, have helped me to face and overcome many challenges in my life.

I have previously worked in different financial institutions, however, I am now a Senior Education Consultant. My job is encouraging and supporting students who want to study abroad. Thai Alumni Association

‌The University of Glasgow Thailand Alumni Association, was formed following a meeting of alumni based in Bangkok in January 2017. The Association received official University recognition in March 2017. Having established a committee to help manage its activities, the Association is excited to be planning its first event, due to take place in October this year. Thai AAKittinand Pithayapriechagol (Porsche) - Chairman
MSc Investment Fund Management

Kittinand is the Chief Product Officer at Dreamaker Crowdfunding. His focus is on supporting the creation of innovative products with a solid and feasible plan and he is passionate about supporting start-up businesses through crowdfunding. He loves to meet people, and to listen to other people’s ideas, create new ideas, and find the best solution to solve every type of problem. Apart from his work, he enjoys workout and photography.

Thai AASquadron Leader Kanin Raktham - Special Advisor
BSc Aeronautical Engineering

Kanin graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1957 with a BSc in Aeronautical Engineering. After graduation, he joined the Thai Air Force as an official, and later went on to work for Thai Airways International Public Company Limited. He remained as an employee of Thai Airways until his retirement. Today, he owns a restaurant named “Chonngern Chonthong” and has fun flying ultralight aircraft.

Thai AAAchareeya Robkit (Reeya) - Vice Chairman
MSc International Business and Entrepreneurship

Reeya graduated in 2014 with an MSc in International Business and Entrepreneurship. Reeya serves as Deputy Dean of Academic and International Affairs at the International College of King Mongkut’s University of Technology in North Bangkok and is a lecturer in International Business, Marketing, and Intercultural HRM. Reeya is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Industrial Business and Human Resource Development. A self-confessed IRN-BRU addict and a Scottish country dance/ceilidh enthusiast, Reeya is known amongst the overseas Scottish community in Bangkok as the “Gaelic singing Thai lassie” after she was invited to sing at the Bangkok St. Andrew’s Society’s Burn Supper 2017.

Thai AAPorrameth Visuddhidham (Meen) - Vice Chairman
MSc Data Science

Porrameth is an Experienced IT consultant and has worked mostly in global companies. He is passionate about data science, AI (Artificial Intelligence) and science in general. Classical music is on his favourite playlist during study time, but rock and everything else are played for his spare time. He recently graduated from the University of Glasgow with an MSc in Data Science. Now, he is a data scientist in the R&D department of a start-up company.ice

Thai AAMaichanok Krapookthong (Sarm) - Secretary
MSc Economic Development

Maichanok achieved an MSc in Economic Development 2016. She is now working as a full-time lecturer at the International College of King Mongkut's University of Technology in North Bangkok. Her passions are economics, international trade and travelling. She sometimes prefers to be alone with a book, but sometimes she steps out of her comfort zone and expresses her love of meeting new people and learning new things. Her motto is "Be better today then you were yesterday and be better tomorrow than you are today."

Thai AANitima Arayachatsakun (Jib) - Treasurer
MSc Economics, Banking and Finance

Nitima achieved an Msc in Economics, Banking, and Finance in 2016. She is currently working in the Portfolio Management Department of a Bangkok Bank. During her postgraduate course, she gained comprehensive knowledge of the programme and participated in many extracurricular activities which enhanced her skills in areas of her career and personal development. She mentioned that her time in Glasgow was one of the most memorable times in her life. As a treasurer, she will contribute her time to develop and support the University of Glasgow alumni community in Thailand. She is delighted to be a part of the alumni team.

 

Peerachart Jartnillaphand (P) - Event Co-Ordinator
BEng Mechanical Engineering with Aeronautics

Peerachart achieved a bachelor degree in Mechanical engineering with Aeronautics 2016. Currently, he is working with AIRBUS as “Flight Operation Officer”. His passion is on flight operation development, and analysis of aircraft engine performance. His favorite hobby is playing aircraft simulator (A320 Type) with his friends. For sport, he is interested in playing badminton and bowling, and singing Karaoke.  His all-time motto is “LABOR OMNIA VINCIT” from Latin phase, which means that “Anything can be achieved if proper work is applied".

I spent a fantastic 2 years at the University of Glasgow between 2012 and 2014 . My experiences there have inspired me to continue my doctoral education in University of Yunnan.  I have previously worked as a fund manager in a Chinese state-owned fund management corporation. Economics and Commercial are my passion, and It’s my pleasure to deepen the relationship between The University of Glasgow and alumniļ¼Œand also make The University of Glasgow more influential throughout China.

I am currently working at the Dianzhong Industrial Development Group. I came back to China in 2015. I have 1 year of work experience in the Shanghai operation of Dacheng Law Offices before I came back to Kunming. I'm honoured to serve the University of Glasgow alumni in Kunming. I have been working for Yunnan Rural Credit Cooperatives, the biggest bank in Yunnan since I graduated from University of Glasgow. I am in charge of E-banking marketing, and I am primarily responsible for organizing and managing marketing projects related to brand-building and market-expanding for E-banking service. Thanks to the University of Glasgow, I gained professional knowledge in the field of marketing, which makes me qualified for my daily job. Moreover, I like many things about the school, such as the beautiful campus, delicious chocolate muffins in the school café, interesting professors and lovely classmates etc. When I think of the University of Glasgow, those wonderful memories make me feel happy and nostalgic. I always miss the time I spent there, it is very precious to me, so I have joined the Yunnan alumni association to make a contribution to it in order to make more friends from the lovely University.

Alex Athanassoulas, President
MBA, 1992

Alex Athanassoulas is the founder, President and CEO of STIRIXIS Group, the internationally awarded strategy-through-execution consultancy firm that creates, designs and manages business concepts globally in retail, F&B, hospitality, workspaces and leisure industries. Alex graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1992 with an MBA (with distinction). He also holds a Masters in Civil Engineering (MCivEng) from the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki.

Alex is a member of the Advisory Board of the Athens Customer Experience Festival, Secretary General of the Board of the Greek Nigerian Chamber of Commerce and Technology, Member of the Board of Directors of the British Hellenic Chamber of Commerce and has served as elected member of the Hellenic Institute of Marketing from 2010 to 2013.

Alex currently serves as the Executive Director and a Member of the Advisory Board for CEO Clubs Greece, and in 2015, was awarded the Best European CEO in Retail Development from the European CEO Awards, and in 2018 as the Best CEO in Europe from Acquisitions International.  

 

Dr Vasiliki Ivrou, Vice President

Vasiliki is currently working as an external trench supervisor at the Department of Antiquities Athens supervising major infrastructure works in Athens. Vasiliki felt honored to be the Vice president of  Hellenic Glasgow Alumni Association. Ioanna Gkintzou, Secretary

Ioanna graduated from the University in Glasgow in 2005, and is currently working as an in-house lawyer in one of the largest Greek insurance companies, while at the same time she maintains a law office as a freelancer. She specialises in civil and commercial litigation & arbitration. Her studies at the University of Glasgow gave her the professional knowledge she needed to develop her career. The time spend in Glasgow was valuable to her and helped her acquire a better perspective of the world, as well as good friends. Vasileios graduated from the Adam Smith Business School at the University of Glasgow in 2015 with a Masters in Management, and he currently works as a Financial Controller for BioMerieux Hellas S.A.

Panayiotis Tsantilas, Board Member
MSc Information Technology 1991

Panayiotis has held various top positions throughout his career, and is currently the Founder and CEO of Palo Digital Technologies Ltd, which manages various news search engines, a mobile and an innovative digital and social media monitoring and analysis tool in 6 countries.  He is passionate about technology and the fields of Big Data and machine learning and has established Palo as the lead innovator in SEE in AI, Machine Learning, Content Aggregation, Clustering of news, NER, Sentiment Analysis, as well as Aspect Mining. He also holds a degree in Physics, with post-graduate studies in Information Technology and Business Administration at the University of Glasgow. He has also attended specialised courses in strategy, marketing, technology and internet, finance and administration both in Greece and abroad. His articles have been published in several Greek and international magazines and newspapers, and in 1995 he issued his first book.

 

Lemonia Kathariou, Board Member
MRes Evolutionary Biology and Systematics, 2004

I am currently working in the consulting sector in one of the biggest consulting firms in Greece, as a Manager/International Bids Coordinator for projects funded by IFIs and other international donors.

I have the fondest memories from the year I spent in Glasgow, which I still consider as one of the best experiences in my life. I have also met some of my dearest friends during this period and for this reason, Glasgow and the University of Glasgow will always be in my heart. I hope that through my work in the Hellenic Glasgow Alumni Association, I will remind all Greek graduates of how lucky we were that we spent a year or more in this excellent institution and raise the University's profile in Greece.
