Project details
The University of Glasgow invites applicants for a new full-time 3 year PhD Scholarship in the area of Digital Citizenship and Data Ethics.
This scholarship is attached to a major ESRC research project of the College of Social Sciences, spanning the Schools of Interdisciplinary Studies and Education (2023-25). The project is entitled Teaching for Digital Citizenship: Data Ethics in the Classroom and Beyond and will employ a range of methodologies including surveys, ethnography and ecological digital data collection to understand the ways digital citizenship and data ethics challenges are understood. It will also use these approaches to understand how responses to these issues are taken up across the curriculum and wider life schools.
The new scholarship is for a doctoral project aimed at supporting the co-creation of resources for secondary schools across the UK to help young people to navigate the moral and civic challenges of the digital space. Its chief focus will be on developing and delivering innovative digitally-enabled participatory action research communities of practice, including young people’s voices, teachers and software developers in the co-creation process. On a day to day basis, the successful applicant will be expected to design, collect and analyse digital data, organise and facilitate community of practice discussions, liaise with project partners, and work with the University of Glasgow Government Relations office to develop and implement an impact strategy for the new resources.
The Principal Investigator for the project is Dr David Lundie, Senior Lecturer in the School of Interdisciplinary Studies at the University’s Dumfries Campus. Dr Lundie will be the Principal Supervisor of the PhD research and the co-supervisor will be Prof Joao Porto de Albuquerque in the Urban Big Data Centre. The successful student will be a full member of the project research team and enjoy wider links to the two schools and the Robert Owen Centre for Educational Change. They will also join the vibrant and diverse community of the Graduate School of the College of Social Sciences, renowned for its research environment and advanced training in research methods across its campuses.
The scholarship award will be tenable for three years and will cover fees and an annual maintenance grant in line with UKRI stipends. It is anticipated that the PhD will commence on 3rd April 2023.
