GU Psych Society update

Published: 21 October 2019

Coffee and cake, Brainscape podcast, Psychology in the pub and more...

The Glasgow University Psychology Society offers a huge range of academic and social events during the year for everyone interested in Psychology.

The academic events aim to provide the opportunity to engage topics and debates across the entire field of Psychology, allowing students to stretch beyond what students learn in class.

Coffee and Cake networking event:
Previously our ‘Cheese and Wine’ night, we are hosting a ‘Coffee and Cake’ event this year to allow the UofG students and staff to meet and talk in a relaxed setting, while satisfying their caffeine cravings and sweet-tooth. Make sure to inspire some office envy with your #mostmarvellousmug.

Monthly guest lectures:
Each month, we invite speakers to talk to us about their area of expertise and the research they are conducting. These are followed by question and answer sessions, allowing attendees to delve deeper into the topic and the opportunity to network with an eclectic range of researchers. With past topics like the ethics of Deep-brain Stimulation and Head Transplantation, Environmental Psychology and The Effect of Social Media on Body Image, there are lectures that everyone can engage with and learn from.

Brainscape Podcast:
Every month we brainstorm, write and record our very own podcast!
To add to our 15 existing ‘Psych Soc O’Clock’ episodes his year we will have even more excellent content (now with weekly episodes) under our new name ‘Brainscape’. With engaging discussions exploring the monthly theme and in-depth interviews with researchers from UofG and beyond, listen to discover new research and explore the huge scope of psychological study and application.Previous episodes have covered Stand-up comedy (including interviews with comedians and technicians at Glasgow’s The Stand), Mindfulness, Psychopathy and much more.

We are always looking for new co-hosts to share their insights or researchers discuss their findings, so please contact the Podcast Creator Amelia Hilton if you would like to be involved in an episode.

Psychology in the Pub:
After the success of last year’s ‘Psychopathy’ Psychology in the Pub, we have started planning many more! We’ve got some superb speakers lined up so make sure to mark these evenings in your diaries when the dates are released.

Write Brain Magazine:
Our yearly print magazine will be released later on in the year and will include thought-provoking pieces from Psychology students all over the world. Filled with articles expressing a diverse collection of ideas and opinions on current psychology it’s a top-quality read, keep your eyes peeled to find out what this year’s theme is.

Future of Psychology 2020 Conference:
Our conference is a day jam-packed with informative talks and interactive workshops. Last years’ Career Conference sold out in 2 days and had 180 attendees and we are expecting an equally brilliant turn out this year.
Our theme ‘The Future of Psychology’ will look at current trends in the field, alongside innovative new ideas and research methods that are propelling the science forward.

Panel Discussion:
At the end of the year we host a panel discussion, where multiple speakers discuss and give their expert opinions on a particular topic in psychology. This provides a unique opportunity to hear a topic be picked apart by leaders in the field. We are excited to announce that this year we will explore Artificial Intelligence and will share more details in the coming months.
