A new programme of clinical research in both Malawi and Glasgow has just been announced which will be supported by the Scottish Government, the World Bank and the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Centre. The WCMP has been closely involved in planning and will be active contributors over the next 5 years.

In addition to infecting the blood, trypanosomes (the parasite that causes African sleeping sickness) can lie dormant in the skin. This could be an important source of infection and explain why we have so far failed to eradicate this important disease.

Research carried out at the WTCMP by former colleagues Professor Jeremy Mottram and Dr Elmarie Myburgh has contributed to an important development in the treatment of leishmaniasis, sleeping sickness and Chagas disease. The results have just been published in a paper in the journal Nature.
