Dr Leandro Lemgruber Soares

Biography

An Imaging Technologist within the Institute of Infection, Immunity & Inflammation, Dr Leandro Lemgruber Soares obtained his PhD in Biophysics in Brazil, studying the cellular structure of parasites and the interaction with host cells using a plethora of imaging techniques.

Dr Lemgruber Soares then moved to Germany to work with Prof Frischknecht at the University of Heidelberg, for a post-doc working on the cytoskeleton dynamics of the Malaria parasite Plasmodium sp and its structural organization, using molecular biology and advanced imaging techniques. Whilst there, he secured his own funding for a project through the university’s CellNetworks Centre of Excellence.

The next step on Leandro's career journey led him to The Rockerfeller University, where took up the position of a Research Support Specialist at the Electron Microscopy Resource Center, before returning to Brazil to become Research Associate in Nanotechnology at the National Technology Institute.

It was in 2015 that he found his way to the University of Glasgow, where he managed the Imaging Sector of the Wellcome Centre for Integrative Parasitology for a three-year period.

Since 2018, he has been Imaging Technologist for the Institute, for which he both established and manages the Glasgow Imaging Facility.

Research interests

Since his undergrad studies, Dr Lemgruber Soares has applied optical, electron, super-resolution and cryo-microscopy in his work, as well as correlative microscopy.
