Principal Investigators Professor Paul Garside and Professor Andy Waters, from the Institute of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation and Wellcome Centre for Molecular Parasitology, have recently returned from a recruitment drive in Malawi where they interviewed staff to help set-up and run the new Blantyre—Blantyre Clinical Research Facility.

The new facility is the centrepiece of a £2 million project funded over five years to establish a state-of-the-art research lab. The project, delivered by the University of Glasgow and University of Malawi College of Medicine, will allow researchers to compare the causes of poor health and low life expectancy in both Blantyre, Scotland and Blantyre, Malawi.

Professor Paul Garside said: “This is the start of a very exciting new development which will bring educational and health benefits to the people of both Malawi and Scotland.”

Professor Andy Waters added: “Our visit was highly successful and the calibre of the applicants gives every promise that our partnership will flourish and provide tangible benefits for all.”
