Dr Jennifer Logue

  • Reader (Institute of Cardiovascular & Medical Sciences)
  • Associate (School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing)

Biography

Jennifer Logue is a Clinical Reader and Honorary Consultant in Metabolic Medicine, focusing both her research and clinical practice on the treatment of obesity and related metabolic disease. After completing her MD in the University's Department of Surgery, she was awarded a Chief Scientist Office/ NHS Education Scotland Clinician Scientist Intermediate Fellowship in 2011. Her clinical work includes diabetes, cardiovascular risk factor and obesity clinics alongside clinical biochemistry.

She is Chief Investigator of the Surgical Obesity Treatment Study; a NIHR funded 10 year longitudinal cohort study of patients undergoing bariatric surgery in Scotland and deputy CI/ Scottish Lead for the NIHR funded study LENS (Lowering Events in Non-proliferative Retinopathy in Scotland). She leads a NHS-Pharmaceutical Industry joint working project evaluating the effect of practitioner education on weight management outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes, and a CSO funded core outcome and instrument set development for lifestyle weight management. She is a member of the scientific steering committee for the EU-funded SCORE-IT core outcome set development for trials in type 2 diabetes and an expert advisor for REBALANCE, a NIHR funded systematic review of the evidence base for the management of severe obesity.

She was a member of the Scottish Intercollegiate Guideline Network (SIGN) obesity guideline development group, writing the guidance on bariatric surgery. She a member of the steering committee of Obesity Action Scotland, a committee of the Scottish Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, and also the Scottish Government’s Diabetes Prevention Working Group.

Jennifer is a member of the NIHR Health Technology Assessment Programme Clinical Evaluation and Trials Board and acts as an associate editor for BMC Endocrine Disorders (Diabetes and Metabolism). Within the University, Jennifer chairs the Institute's Athena SWAN self-assessment team, having successful led the institute to a Bronze-award in 2015, is a member of the college Gender Equality Committee and an Advisor of Studies for the School of Medicine.

Research interests

Jennifer's research focuses on the clinical management of obesity, alongside cardiovascular disease prevention. It is wide ranging, spanning behavioural interventions with practitioners, evaluation of weight management programmes using routinely collected data, trials of novel weight management interventions and studies to better understand the molecular mechanisms by which weight loss improves metabolic disease. She has a strong interest in the use of routine health data for evaluation of efficacy and effectiveness.

Current projects include:

  • Surgical Obesity Treatment Study, SCOTS: a NIHR HTA funded cohort study of patients undergoing bariatric surgery in Scotland, focusing on long year (10 year) health outcomes using routine NHS data.
  • Big Talk, Small Difference: a RCT of practitioner education in behaviour change techniques to improve outcomes for patients with T2DM attending weight management (NHS/ Pharamceutical Industry Joint Working project between NHS GG&C, University of Glasgow, MSD and Astra Zeneca, and an unrestricted educational grant from Janssen)
  • Lowering Events in Non-Proliferative Retinopathy Scotland (LENS): a NIHR HTA funded RCT of fenofibrate to reduce progression of diabetic retinopathy. As an efficient trial, it utilises health records for recruitment, follow-up and outcomes.
  • Core outcomes for lifestyle weight management: funded by the Chief Scientist Office, Scotland, this work uses consensus methodology to develop a core outcome set for weight management. The overall is is to improve routine data collection allowing more efficient evaluation and comparison of the outcomes of weight management programmes.
