Lawrence Fellowship before taking up his current academic post at the University of Glasgow.

Research interests

Member:

My laboratory is interested in identifying the molecular and cellular mechanisms that underlie the link between diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In particular, we and others have previously shown that insulin itself acts on the endothelial cells that line blood vessels to produce nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels and prevents atherosclerosis. In addition, we have demonstrated that AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) has similar beneficial effects on endothelial cells. Research in my laboratory currently concentrates the on: i) How changes in nutrient supply regulate insulin action ii) How nutrient supply regulates inflammatory signalling found in obesity and vascular disease iii) How nutrient supply regulates cell growth. Our hope is that the results of our work will further expand our knowledge of how insulin and AMPK affect metabolic and cardiovascular tissues, which will aid the development of future drugs and new therapies for the treatment of diabetes and its associated cardiovascular complications.
