NERD grant workshop series for ECRs
We are very excited to announce our upcoming grant workshop series, which will start on June 14th with a seminar on grant writing and culminate with a mock grant review panel in October (see event listings below). Applications will then be invited to the first NERD ECR seed funding scheme, kindly co-sponsored by the Heads of IIIs and ICAMS. These events are open to all NERD members and are aimed at de-mystifying the grant application process, aiding in the development of grantsmanship skills and supporting ECRs in their applications to the seed funding scheme – and beyond!
Event listings are as follows:
1) SEMINAR: Introduction to grant writing (14/6/18)
Have a great research idea but not sure how to start making it a reality? Then come along to this grant writing seminar: you’ll find out about different funding opportunities and get expert advice on planning and writing grants for research councils, charities and other sources of funding.
WHAT: Seminar on grants and grant writing for ECRs
WHEN: Thursday 14th June, 12.30-2pm (lunch provided)
WHERE: Seminar room 215/6, MRC Centre for Virus Research, Garscube campus
WHAT WE’VE GOT PLANNED: Dr Kim Moran-Jones, project co-ordinator for MVLS, will tell you about small and large grant funding opportunities and describe the different stages of grant planning and application at UoG. Prof. Brian Willett will then give you some expert tips and advice to help you develop your grantsmanship skills.
HOW TO REGISTER: Please fill in the doodle poll (https://doodle.com/poll/7a7xtaay639qr8x3) so we know if anybody needs a taxi provided from Gilmorehill campus and how many pizzas we need to order!
2) WORKSHOP: 1-day grant brewing session (22/6/18)
Come along to this sandpit-style workshop to meet colleagues across IIIs and ICAMS to generate new collaborative research ideas! Lunch, coffee and a fertile grant brewing atmosphere will be provided.
WHAT: Grant brewing workshop
WHEN: Friday 22nd June, 10am-4pm (lunch provided)
WHERE: Hugh Fraser seminar room, Wolfson Medical School building, Gilmorehill Campus
WHAT WE’VE GOT PLANNED: Helped by an expert professional Facilitator, Dr. Tracey Stead, we will work on developing collaborative research ideas through a series of group activities and discussions. This workshop will be a great first step towards developing productive collaborations with your peers across ICAMS and IIIs, aimed at helping you prepare fantastic applications for our NERD ECR seed funding grant and other funding schemes! N.B attendance at this workshop is strongly advised for all potential applicants to the seed funding scheme.
HOW TO REGISTER: Sign up by sending an email to the NERD committee (firstname.lastname@example.org) who will get back to you with further details of the workshop and pre-workshop task instructions.
3) WRITING: writing boot camps (20/7/18 and 24/8/18)
Finding it hard to fit grant or fellowship writing in around your day-to-day lab work? Making excuses not to write up a paper, covering letter or application? Then come along to our half- or full-day writing boot camps for some peer-supported, focused writing time.
WHAT: writing boot camps
WHEN: Friday 20th July and Friday 24th August, 10-12.30pm and 1pm-4pm.
WHERE: Friday 20th July at Gilmorehill (location TBC), Friday 24th August at Garscube (location TBC)
WHAT WE’VE GOT PLANNED: Join us for this series of writing "bootcamps" – the sessions are aimed at ECRs in IIIs/ICAMS who would like to dedicate either a full day or half day to write, whether it is a paper, a grant proposal, a fellowship application or covering letter. The session incorporates the Pomodoro technique, with regular breaks and opportunities to discuss. Participants will be encouraged to keep their inboxes closed during the day, for a better focus on writing.
HOW TO REGISTER: Please fill in the doodle poll (https://doodle.com/poll/an8343cgmaibys7n) to register so we know how much coffee to supply: if you require a taxi to/from Garscube, please email the NERD committee at least 48h prior to the event (email@example.com)
4) DEMONSTRATION: mock grant review panel
The ultimate destination for most grants and fellowships we write is a funding body review panel. This event will help you better prepare competitive grant and fellowship applications either now or in the future – including applications to the NERD ECR seed funding scheme!
WHAT: mock grant review panel
WHEN: Early October: date TBC
WHERE: Gilmorehill campus: location TBC
WHAT WE’VE GOT PLANNED: The aim of this event is to give an insight into the workings of a funding review committee and should help you to better prepare competitive grant applications. Prior grant applications from members of ICAMS/IIIs will be distributed prior to the meeting for discussion in groups and brief presentation to the panel. The format has been designed to be as similar as possible to committee meetings of the major grant giving bodies. A panel of current grant committee members will facilitate critical appraisal of grants and detailed discussion.
HOW TO REGISTER: Details on how to register, instructions and grants for review will be provided in August.
5) APPLICATION: ECR seed funding grant (c. £4K)
Applications will be invited for our ECR seed funding scheme, which has been kindly co-sponsored by the Heads of ICAMS and IIIs. This small grant scheme will be open to all ECRs who have not yet held substantive grant or fellowship funding (>£50K). Applications should be for collaborative projects between different groups, and will primarily be evaluated by a panel of NERD members (please contact the committee if you would like to volunteer as a peer reviewer). The short application form will be made available through the NERD webpages after the Grant Brewing workshop in June, and the deadline for applications will be November 29th, 2018.
