Biography

Oarabile has a BSc in Mathematics from the University of Botswana, MSc in Statistics from the University of Manchester, and a PhD in Statistics (Disease Mapping and Modelling) obtained from the University of Strathclyde in 2009. She has worked as a Staff Development Fellow (Mathematics) at the University of Botswana, Department of Mathematics in 1997-1998, and appointed a Lecturer in 2001-2004, teaching Mathematics and Statistics.

Oarabile joined MRC/CSO  Social and Public Health Sciences Unit, Ethnicity and Health team in 2008 as a Research Scientist, to work on National Prevention Research Initiative (NPRI) Phase II funded project. The project examined whether neighbourhood environments contribute to ethnic differences in obesity, physical activity and diets. The project used Health Survey for England (HSE) data linked to area measures of ethnic density, deprivation, food retail environment and physical activity opportunities. She also worked with Measuring Health team and looked at social patterning of suicide in Scotland. In 2012 she joined Determinants of Adolescent Social well-being and Health (DASH) longitudinal study as a Medical Statistician – looking  at how social, environmental and biological factors affect the health and well-being of young people from different social and ethnic backgrounds in London.  In 2015 she took up a new role as a cross unit support Statistician, and she is now working on various observational /epidemiological  studies  including natural experiments assessing impact of policy interventions on health. The projects use primary and secondary data sets -  large and complex  longitudinal and  cross-sectional  data sets from various sources.
