Research Themes

The group is focused on understanding the role of immune molecular mechanisms (cytokines and chemokines) in serious mental disorder.  The group's methods are centred on molecular techniques in preclinical models and human neuroimaging.

Basic and Translational studies

Key basic research questions:  The key questions here are focused on determining the role of cytokine and chemokine biology in the pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric disorders.  The current focus is on the mechanisms linking peripheral immune markers to brain responses.  These studies use state-of-the-art molecular biology techniques.

Key translational research questions:  Using the clinically available antagonism of key cytokines such as TNFa through biological therapies, we are exploring the impact of this molecular antagonism on the brain.  The technologies uses human neuroimaging and biomarker technology.

Clinical & Population Studies
Linking immune/inflammatory peripheral markers to neuroimaging measures

Key basic research questions: Integral to these studies is exploring the relationship between the physiological markers of stress - in particular the inflammatory/immune component of this - and change in brain structure and function.  Specifically, we have used state fMRI to explore relationships between peripheral inflammatory markers and changes in specific neuro networks (connectivity) that are central to emotional and cognitive functioning.  In addition, we are using structural MRI and MRS (magnetic resonance spectroscopy) to test specific hypothesis around the impact of physiological stress on neuronal turnover and integrity in vivo.

Testing the utility of physiological stress biomarkers in population samples

Key research questions: Previous acquired data support the hypothesis that stress biomarkers (especially inflammatory) have a negative impact on health outcomes.
