Dr Anne Ellaway

Biography

Anne has a longstanding interest in exploring the processes by which features of the local social and physical environment might influence health and the ability to lead a healthy life. Research interests also include investigating the relative effects upon health of different social indicators over time and place.
 
Anne has a BA Hons. in Social Sciences (majoring in psychology), an MSc in Applied Social Sciences and a PhD (obtained from the University of Glasgow).  Anne's first research post was in the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Glasgow University. She joined the MRC Unit in 1990 as a researcher working with Sally Macintyre on a variety of projects until 1992. Anne then left the Unit for two years to work for Strathclyde Regional Council's Social Policy Unit as their researcher in health and social policy, subsequently rejoining the MRC Unit working on the Social & Spatial Patterning of Health programme. Anne is on the Editorial Boards of Health & Place and is Research Director of the Twenty-07 Study, principal investigator on the Transport, Health & Wellbeing Study and the NPRI funded Scotland wide APOLLO study of access  to physical activity opportunities and obesity among adults. Anne is principal investigator on the SPACES study which is exploring the role of the built and natural environment on children’s physical activity levels.

In 2012 Anne was appointed Honorary Professor in the Institute of Health and Wellbeing, University of Glasgow.
