Biography

Alison is a Research Associate in the Complexity Programme in the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit (SPHSU). Since joining the unit in 2016, Alison’s research has focused on the ‘Transferability of Interventions’ workstream.

She has worked on the ‘Transferring parenting programmes from HICs to LICs’ project. In particular, she worked on a review of quantitative association data on parenting practices and child health and psychosocial outcomes in sub-Saharan African countries (SSA) compared with HICs (Devlin et al, 2018). This review used a modified version of the WHO parenting typology to synthesise the results which showed that patterns of association are broadly similar across global regions.

She has worked on the ‘Transferability of the San Patrignano model of drug recovery’ project designed to investigate the programme theory of the San Patrignano recovery community, Italy. Through articulating key mechanisms and contextual features underlying San Patrignano, this two stage study has informed the transfer & adaptation of the model to River Garden, Auchincruive (Scotland) (Devlin & Wight, 2018; Devlin & Wight 2020; Devlin & Wight, 2021).

Other current project(s) with colleagues include the interdisciplinary ESRC funded study: ‘Developing complex systems methods capacity in NHS Health Scotland’ which is investigating public health stakeholders’ perceptions of complex interventions and related methodologies.

Previously, Alison worked in General Practice & Primary Care (GPPC) on the process evaluation of the ‘Delivering Assisted Living Lifestyles at Scale’ (dallas) programme which was a £37 Million UK-wide initiative to deploy a range of digital tools and services to support healthy ageing and self-care. This prospective, longitudinal study investigated implementation processes and involved analysis of a large scale qualitative dataset.

Prior to this, Alison held research posts in the College of Social Sciences and worked on several externally funded research studies including:

  • The multi-disciplinary ‘Inter-Life’ research programme funded by ESRC/EPSRC as part of the (£12.3M) UK-TEL programme. This programme was launched to develop technologies to assist young people undergoing life transitions (Devlin et al, 2013
  • The award winning ‘Journeys from Images to Words’ project funded by the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation. This involved the use of innovative visual research methods and working with children from refugee and asylum seeking families.
  • Research commissioned by the Scottish Government (Social Research) to inform the development of an inclusive curriculum in Scotland. This involved case study research on skills for life, learning and work.
