Awards/competitions

  • UoG  Knowledge Exchange and Public Engagement Awards 2020
    MVLS Engagement team are happy to support applications to the Community or Public Engagement Initiative category of the UoG  Knowledge Exchange and Public Engagement Awards. Nominations close at 9am on Friday 15th of November 2019. If you are interested in applying in this category please contact MVLS-Engage@glasgow.ac.uk Last year we supported  Dr Caroline Millins School of Veterinary Medicine and Dr Roman Biek IBACHM to apply and they were awarded Joint Winner of the Best Community or Public Engagement Initiative.
  • TheGIST Video Competition
    TheGIST (Glasgow Insight into Science and Technology) are a student-run science magazine, network and society that aims to communicate science clearly, accurately and passionately.   A new 30-second video competition in collaboration with Glasgow Science Centre and Discovery with Three on the theme ‘Science is for Everyone’ is open to all with winning entries screened on the 15-metre-long LED screen outside the Glasgow Science Centre. Applications close on 31 October 2019. 

Training

  • MVLS Public Engagement Gathering - Public and Patient Involvement
    Learn more about the practical aspects of how to involve patients and the public in your research.
    Thursday 21 November 2019 at 2:00–3.30pm
    Teaching room, House 2, General Practice and Primary Care
    MVLS PPIe Lead, Tracy Ibbotson will be running this Gathering and there will be opportunities to hear directly from some actively involved patients. This is an excellent opportunity to discuss your own patient and public involvement activities or ideas.  Open to researchers, staff and post graduate students currently active in patient and public involvement or who wish to learn more.  Book to attend at MVLS Gathering: Public and Patient Involvement

Funding

  • Public engagement funding for Wellcome researchers
    The ScotPEN Wellcome Engagement Award is a pilot scheme to help Wellcome grant holders engage the public with their research. Wellcome grant holders may apply for between £5,000 and £100,000 with post-docs and PhD students eligible as named co-applicants. Applications close at 5pm on Friday 25 October 2019. A second call will open in early January and close Friday 27 March 2020. The MVLS Engagement team will support those interested to help develop their application. Please email MVLS-Engage@glasgow.ac.uk to register an interest in this award.

Event opportunities

  • Bring your STEM engagements for Kinning Park Complex this Halloween
    The Glasgow Science Festival Team are looking for volunteers who can bring a family friendly STEM engagement to Kinning Park Complex this Halloween Thursday 31 October 2019.
    They are supporting Refuweegee, a community-led charity who host a monthly events for those newly arrived in Glasgow. Our Halloween inspired activities will run between 11-3pm, then local young people will be invited to join the fun between 3-5pm. To attend contact Deborah McNeill (Deborah.McNeill@glasgow.ac.uk) with details of your activity and when you wish to attend (11-3pm, 3-5pm, both). The MVLS Engagement team are also happy to offer support and advice.
  • Pint of Science 2020 Seeks Volunteers
    This annual festival 11–13 May 2020 allows scientists to discuss their latest research with the public in local pubs. If you are interested in applying to speak or support these events, sign up via their online form. Any questions e-mail pos.glasgow@gmail.com
