BBSRC funding awarded
John Christie and Brian Smith have been awarded BBSRC funding to engineer plant photoreceptor performance for improved biomass production. Phototropin receptor kinases optimize photosynthetic productivity by coordinating multiple light-capturing processes. This project will use a combinatorial engineering strategy to better synchronize the actions of these photoreceptors in Arabidopsis. These design principles will be extended to crops by using barley as a model together with Wendy Hardwood (John Innes Centre). A major outcome of this interlinked effort will be to establish a structural and functional blueprint for constructing engineered photoreceptors to coordinate stepwise enhancements in photosynthetic performance with an aim of increasing crop yield.
