Ruairidh Edwards presents at EMBO conference
Ruairidh Edwards from Professor Kostas Tokatlidis' group recently attended an EMBO conference held in Sant Feliu de Guixols, Spain. Ru was excited to not only attend, but to have the opportunity to present a poster on his work on how he is investigating the key oxidative stress sensor in yeast, Gpx3, is imported into mitochondria at the four day meeting. Ru spoke about his experience:
'I was recently given the opportunity to attend the EMBO meeting on current advances in protein translocation across membranes in Sant Feliu de Guixols, a small Spanish town (‘paradise’ – see photos) one and half hours drive from Barcelona. The meeting was four days long and brought experts in the field of organelle protein import from far and wide. I spent a day sightseeing in Barcelona before the conference where I managed to visit some of the great attractions Barcelona has to offer such as Gaudi’s La Sagrada Familia and Park Guell. I then arrived at the conference where I caught up with other PhD students I had met at a previous conference. On the second day I presented a poster on my work. This was fantastic as I received feedback and some ideas from my peers for experiments to try. Other than the poster presentation there were many interesting talks from researchers investigating the endoplasmic reticulum and peroxisomes. These talks furthered my understanding of other organelle import mechanisms and gave me ideas to adapt these concepts to mitochondrial protein import. On the last night we were all treated to a banquet meal and a flamenco dance show with a few drinks. All the students and PI’s were much ‘merrier’ than the previous days and it turned out to be a great night!
I had a brilliant time at the conference; I met some fantastic people who I can now call friends all whilst learning more about my field in an environment that was relaxed and fun. Hopefully I get the opportunity to go to other conferences before I finish up my PhD!'
