IBAHCM Equality & Diversity - Athena Swan Silver Departmental Award

In October 2016 the Institute was awarded an Athena SWAN Silver departmental award.

Michelle and Dan with patron Sir Paul Nurse The award updates significantly our earlier Athena SWAN Bronze award that we were awarded in May 2014.

Our new Athena SWAN Silver Award Application and Action Plan ‌ demonstrates our continuing and evolving commitment to best practice in recruiting and supporting the career development and progression of female scientists, addressing gender inequalities in higher education.

This reflects the clear culture of our Institute in which we seek to attract the most creative, imaginative, and collegiate researchers to join us, and do so by providing a vibrant, dynamic, personally supportive and empathetic research environment.

Our departmental award complements the renewal of the University of Glasgow's Institutional Bronze award in October 2016, which provides a wider cultural support for gender equality.

Copies of our Bronze Athena SWAN Application and Action Plan and our new Athena SWAN Silver Award Application and Action Plan are available to download, as well as the 2016 Athena SWAN Silver Award Staff Survey Results and the Athena SWAN Silver Award Feedback  .

Podcast: The October 2014 edition of our Institute podcast & blog, Naturally Speaking, explored 'Gender inequality in Science'. In the podcast, researchers in the Institute discussed the evidence for women being underrepresented in scientific research and why this bias exists. They then explore the Athena Swan Charter, and how we might reverse any bias and promote more diverse working environments.
