Smart particles for IoT monitoring of civil infrastructure
This project will consider how to develop networks of individual non-stationary sensors (smart particles) that can monitor the function, and eventual incipient failure, of civil infrastructure by exploiting Internet of Things (IoT) techniques. In particular, the project will develop novel sensing particles, communication protocols and data-processing techniques that will enable sparse measurements to be properly integrated into a single evaluation and visualisation framework. The focus is on complex problems of civil infrastructure monitoring, for which ordinary, stationary sensors are poorly suited.
Project Team and where the student will be based
The project will be jointly supervised by Dr Stefanos Papanicolopulos, Senior Lecturer at the School of Engineering of the University of Edinburgh, and by Dr Manousos Valyrakis, Lecturer at the James Watt School of Engineering. Both supervisors are based in the Institute/Division of Infrastructure and Environment of their respective Universities.
- Academic qualifications – A first-class or 2:1 undergraduate degree in Engineering, Physics or a related discipline is required. The project focuses on infrastructure relevant to Civil Engineering (including Environmental, Structural and Geotechnical Engineering), however, candidates with a different background demonstrating their interest in infrastructure and/or sensors are also encouraged to apply.
- Experience – Experience in conducting laboratory-based experiments and using sensors, and in the processing of experimental results is desirable.
- Skills/Attributes – Experience of fundamental laboratory skills, good written and oral communication skills, strong motivation, good time management
