- Professor of Global Change Science - University College London
Simon Lewis is Professor of Global Change Science at University College London, as a half time position. He holds an equivalent position at the University of Leeds.
His research interests are to understand how humans are changing the Earth as a system. Specifically, how can a population of at least 8 billion can lead fulfilled lives without breaching environmental thresholds that may cause serious social, economic and environmental disruption, or even more severe outcomes.
His focus is largely focused geographically on the tropical ecosystems. Recent work has shown that the carbon sink in tropical forests has saturated decades ahead of ever the most pessimistic climate models (Hubua, Lewis et al. 2020, Nature), and that tropical forest restoration targets are being games by some countries (Lewis et al. 2018, Nature).
