The use of depositional environments (e.g. peat, floodplain alluvium, lake / estuarine sediment, saltmarsh and cave deposits) as archives of environmental change and human impacts. The longer-term perspective (i.e., millennia to centurial timeframes) provided by the analysis of the matrix and proxies recorded in such sedimentary deposits, through palaeoecological and geochemical techniques, can facilitate the reconstruction of past and, therefore, the anticipation of future environmental conditions.
