Research interests

Nigel is the director for the Institute of Global Food Security (IGFS), Queens University, Belfast (QUB). IGFS is a interdisciplinary institute within the School of Biological sciences, QUB, with a focus on food safety and security.

Previously, Nigel was Waitrose Professor of Sustainable Agriculture, Director of Enterprise and a member of the Executive team at Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS) at Aberystwyth University.

Nigel also held a Chair Public Engagement with Science for AU. He was President of the British Society of Animal Science 2011-12 and has been involved in many government, industry and academic forums addressing agriculture and food.

He is also the chair of the management board of the journal Animal and has published over 200 scientific papers, contributed book chapters and abstracts on animal science. He has secured over 5 million pounds of RCUK and EU funding in the last 10 years in the field of agriculture/animal science.
