Research interests

My research is concerned with understanding the dynamics of the integrated Earth system in the past, present and future.

I have worked recently on projects examining the interaction between climate change and the evolution of biodiversity and human development and culture on multi-millennial to million-year timescales.

Simultaneously, I have been involved in research into the impacts of climate and environmental change on the global economy and financial system, including the potential for the sustainability transition to trigger financial and economic instability, and the design of appropriate policy frameworks to accelerate and manage the transition.
