Research interests

I am Head of the Centre for Water, Environment, Sustainability & Public Health in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK.

I lead a research group at the University of Strathclyde that focuses on the drivers and impacts of extreme weather on the built and natural environments, and the wider application and use of weather and climate information and knowledge for the management of multi-hazard risk.

My research is broad and cross-disciplinary, covering:

  • hydro-meteorological prediction on weather and climatic timescales
  • sectoral applications and climate services
  • risk management

My research interests are in the emerging fields of:

  • compound events and multi-hazards
  • impact-based forecasting
  • the prediction and application of predictions on extended-range weather and climatic timescales

I have particular expertise in the application of subseasonal-to-seasonal (S2S) predictions, leading several international publications in the field, and soon to be co-leading a new Applications Science Sub-project as part of the WWRP/WCRP S2S Prediction Project.
