Research interests

Professor Andy Miah, PhD (@andymiah), is Chair in Science Communication & Future Media at the University of Salford, Manchester and Board member of the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester.

He is renowned for his research into ethics and emerging technologies, where recent publications focus on artificial intelligence, mobile health, and drones.

In 2015, he was presented with the UK’s national award for science communication by the BIG STEM network. Professor Miah’s research discusses the intersections of art, ethics, technology and culture and he has published over 150 academic articles in refereed journals and books, along with writing for magazines and newspapers, such as the Washington Post and the Independent.

Professor Miah has given over 300 major conference presentations and he is often invited to speak about science in society. His expertise in citizen science has informed the strategic development of public engagement with research at the University of Salford, through which he has collaborated with organizations internationally to fund citizen science projects.

Notably, he is a member of the Swiss National Science Foundation AGORA Committee, which has funded over £3m citizen engagement projects over the last 3 years. He has also held Board Memberships of various citizen-led science festivals, helping to produce citizen science projects.
