Workshops and Reading Groups

Comann-rannsachaidh air Eachdraidh nan Gàidheal ann an Alba/ Discussion Group on the History of Gaelic Scotland

Established in September 2012, this group provides a forum for discussion for staff, postdoctoral students and postgraduates (PGR and PGT) who have an interest in the history of Gaelic speakers in Scotland/Gaelic in Scotland/the Highlands of Scotland. ‘History’ is very much a catch-all, also encompassing language, literature, culture, religion, nomenclature, archaeology, landscape, built heritage and material culture, etc. All time periods from the early medieval to the present are relevant. GU Subject areas usually represented are History, Celtic and Gaelic, Archaeology, Theology and Religious Studies and English Language and Literature, but interest from any part of the university is welcomed. The group’s corresponding membership is international, comprising academics and PG students in higher educational institutions, and independent scholars. Discussion is usually prefaced by introductory remarks from one of those present, and based on pre-circulated texts, of three main types: papers (pre-publication or recently published) by present-day academics, whose authors will if possible join us and speak to their work; significant texts, both primary and secondary; and postgraduate work in progress.

To date the group has met in room 307 in Scottish History, 9 University Gardens, on a weekly or near-weekly basis. In session 2020-21 meetings will take place online using Zoom, and it is hoped that this will allow for a widening of participation. Meetings usually last an hour, sometimes longer. New participants are always very welcome.

Onomastics Reading Group

The Onomastics Reading Group (or Onomastication) meets roughly fortnightly on a Thursday at 12 noon in term-time to discuss anything and everything relating to name studies.

This ranges from onomastic theory to the names of omelettes to names in medieval charters; presentations have been given by students and academics from Glasgow and other institutions on a range of subjects including Ainmean-Àite na h-Alba (Gaelic Place-Names of Scotland), the digitisation of the place-name series in Denmark and personal naming patterns in Scotland; one meeting included sampling single malts in the name of onomastic research!

Everyone with an interest in name studies is very welcome to join in.

The group meets fortnightly on Zoom starting on 1 October at 12 noon, and if you are interested please email Brittnee Leysen, b.leysen.1@research.gla.ac.uk.

Scottish Latin Reading Group

The Scottish Latin Reading Group is an informal, interdiscplinary meeting for staff and students with an interest in any aspect of Latin written in Scotland or by Scottish authors, or relating to Scotland. Texts are provided in translation, and in the past we’ve covered everything from the Declaration of Arbroath to an epic poem on the Battle of Bothwell Bridge. We also take requests, and if any member of staff or PG student is currently looking at a Scottish Latin text and would like to read through it in the group, or get advice on translation, we’d be delighted to help.
