Biography

In my Facility role I work collaboratively with, and support, a wide range of researchers from institutions across the UK, who are applying radiocarbon to global environmental questions. 

Lake coring

My particular expertise focuses upon marine environments, covering topics from the use of deep-sea foraminifera to reconstruct past ocean circulation and climate, to measurement of dissolved carbon in modern seawater samples to investigate current climate change. My research areas cover high-latitude environments such as the Antarctic and Arctic, and I have been fortunate enough to conduct fieldwork in these challenging settings.

Along with measurement, I am interested in combining radiocarbon with other chronological methods such as tephrochronology, addressing problems such as Marine 14C Reservoir Effects, and developing new laboratory methods for sample analysis. I am always pleased to provide advice and assistance, and to hear from potential collaborators and students

Examples of current projects

BRITICE-CHRONO

This  is a major NERC-funded consortium of more than 40 researchers comprising glaciologists, marine and terrestrial Quaternary scientists and ice-sheet modellers, In this project I coordinate the radiocarbon dating of a wide range of materials (358 samples and counting!) from over 400 cores, and develop methods, such as project-specific backgrounds to obtain the highest quality data possible. Over the last 5 years the consortium has collected and dated 672 terrestrial and marine samples to determine the retreat rates of the last British and Irish Ice Sheet (BIIS) from the continental shelf edge to a few kilometres onshore. We are combining radiocarbon results with terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide and optically stimulated luminescence ages, to produce a new glacial retreat map for Britain, and associated ice sheet models.
